Project Goal
Create a custom-built application to standardize workflows in the field across multiple worldwide asset locations. We used analytics to drive event notifications to both field and in-office staff allowing users to manage priority events through visually integrated reports and dashboards. The event data being populated needed to be accurate, relevant, and accessible on both desktop and tablet devices.

Design & Deliverables Process
-
Detailed 4 persona profiles during the design thinking workshop, defining user journeys for each individual role on whiteboards in small groups.
-
Each participant in the workshop was given blank screens to create a visual representation of what they thought the application should incorporate. Paper prototypes were tested with potential users during the workshop sessions.
-
Wireframe designs were created rapidly, often driven by collaborative whiteboarding sessions.
-
Low-fidelity wireframes in Sketch were vetted with stakeholders in weekly user testing sessions as a click-through prototype in InVision conducted on-site in the field.
-
The project POC started as a solution for one field asset location. After successful implementation, it was scaled to handle an additional 3 asset locations globally.

The Outcome
The application was created as a way for company employees to have knowledge and access to accurate data about the well sites in the field. It was ultimately deployed to four different assets across both the United States and Canada with the intention of increasing safety and decreasing the number of field operators driving routes unnecessarily. With accurate data and analytic-driven events about each well site, the stakeholders were better able to analyze where they were needed in the field and the locations that required their attention.

Learnings & Challenges
-
I was challenged during early design reviews to educate the client about the use of placeholder content including text and images. This was essential to set the stage that this was not the final product and avoid the unnecessary derailing conversations about 'lorem ipsum'.
-
Creating high-fidelity clickable prototypes in InVision, allowed the product owners, stakeholders, and user groups as well as the technical design team and development team to fully understand and critique all functionality in the application.
-
The detail is in the design which often requires annotations for development. It was important to maintain accurate documentation to take any guesswork out for developers.
